Hello all,
I would like your thoughts on the idea for a new Taikai (competition) The focus being familiarising/learning at all levels what’s required from fighters & referees in these events.

My suggestion is a Kyusha & 1&2 Dan Taikai with an introduction for all, To Shinpaning (refereeing). With the main objective being a learning experience.

I would like to utilise the 2nd, 3rd & 4th Dan members throughout the association, as the main Shinpan. To give a informative & practical introduction or further insight, Into this crucial part of Kendo

I would really like the Dojo DRC’s to take the lead on this, As I also think it’s a great opportunity to build relationships between clubs not only regionally but nationally.

All thoughts and suggestions greatly appreciated.

Sounds like an excellent idea, I'd be very happy to help organise and/or participate.

Nagamitsu dojo will support this taikai.

I love this idea, I think it's a great way to proactively get newer people in kendo into understanding what the criteria for ippon are and experience up close by having to think about it whilst referring lower level matches/matches closer to their skill level

I do like the idea of a training taikai as there are not many shinpan opportunities for kendoka up in the north of the UK. Perhaps you could make it one day for shinpan training, and another for an actual taikai. Only concern I'd have is that if you are judging kyusha that it may be harder for the shinpan to learn what correct ippon actually looks like. So it may be better to have so 'exhibition' matches in order to show the shinpan what to look for.

Hey I think this is a fantastic idea in Aberdeen they run a takai (the Thistle cup) to give nidan and below a takai to gain experience in it is a fantastic takai and a great day out over the years it has evolved.
No reason the takai you are suggesting can do the same at the very least it would give 3-5 dans an easy environment to learn shinpan skills in.
Got my vote.

A great idea, one I'm eager to participate in!
